I seriously already love this couple!!! They are just so much fun to be around. I feel like I've known them for a long time. I could NOT get over how high their dog kept jumping!! Lol. And she loved eating the snowballs! Haha. It was hard to keep them away from her! Thanks guys for being such great sports and totally rocking out your session! Loved it! Had such a great time. Such a pretty winter day!

This couple did more laughing than I have ever witnessed during an e-session. :) We shot for half a regular e-session b/c it was CRAZY cold and so I am looking forward to the other half of this session! :) I enjoyed meeting their doggie, Corbin. He's so fluffy!! Love it when people incorporate their furbabies into the session. We found a dilapidated area towards the end of the session and those by far were my favorites. Quite the adventure! Thanks guys for making my job so much fun. :)

Seeing music | Jen Hock

This week I picked a suggestion that was turned in last week {any suggestions are valid provided that you keep giving me ideas!} - I picked it for its creativity and personal appeal and because the suggestion came from someone who kept sharing this giveaway link on her page!! I couldn't help but appreciate her spreading the word. Here was the suggestion by Jen Hock:

"I suggest you photograph music. What does that mean...well it could be sheet music, could be instruments which could be orchestra type, band type or the old fashioned pot and wooden spoon, could be natures music such as birds or wind chimes. Many people listen to music but to SEE it in its passion and emotion could be very fun and very cool ;) Just a thought ;) Blessings to you."

I loved this idea as soon as I saw two words: sheet music. In town there is an old antique store that I browse through quite often. Really nice people that work there. I enjoy the small town conversation, the quiet, the smell of the coffee they are brewing. This antique store is just such a magical place. From the way the sun streams in on the old quaint things and their cobwebs to the sound of the creaking floors and rattling glass jars as you walk down the aisles. My heart just has this thing for nostalgia I can't explain.

There's an old player piano in this antique store. It sits piled high with old spools in their boxes. Seemingly forgotten and begging to be played. I am always drawn to it. For months I've wanted a reason to photograph it. This suggestion gave me the reason.

When I was a girl I took piano lessons from a man who had really smelly breath. I was 8. Some things you don't forget. But more than anything I remember quiet afternoons and playing on that old upright. That's where my love for piano began.. and lessons ended. When my parents divorced I really didn't get to finish playing or taking lessons. However, years later when I was 14 I started playing again on a piano my dad had bought. It became cathartic and a first love for me. Every day after school when most kids were probably outside playing kickball or something at the park, I was sitting at the piano trying to create by ear... beautiful melodies.. and actually, I wasn't too bad at picking out a song and replaying it on the piano. I learned to play by note enough, but I was always better at playing by ear.

To this day I am drawn to piano melodies in music. To me, there is no other instrument as delicately haunting as the piano. And for me personally, it always brings back memories of my childhood. It's strings are those of deep emotion and sweet nostalgia that attach to my heart. Music itself - is like an appendage to me. So much a part of my life day in day out. Music defines a lot about who I am personally. I think it does for most artists.

Thank you first off to all of you who participated in submitting applications for my Senior Reps of 2013! There were many qualified applicants and you are all each very fantastic! Which made choosing truly difficult! I wish I could choose you all! I had to consider however my own cost and time in the program. I had to keep it manageable for me as I am a busy woman most of the time! I really spent some time weighing the candidates, their schools, their activities and of course their answers to my questions. I have selected 4 Senior Reps for 2013 - each from a different school. This girl is gorgeous, tall {seriously amazing heels!} and fun to be around! But what I love about her most is how down to earth she is despite the solid fact that she can rock a dress and crazy heels to a Nike jumpsuit. As we were shooting I told her I envied that my school in HS didn't have basketball for girls. I've always been a little bit dismayed about the fact that with my height, I didn't get to play. But this girl, she plays and I am positive she is dy-no-mite. I enjoyed getting to hang out with her mom a bit too. The weather was chilly but we still had a fantastic time! Part of my job that I love most is just chatting with people and getting to know more about what they love. Their dreams. Their plans and goals. I really believe Ayana has a beautiful future ahead of her. She's gonna go far.

Thank you Ayana for braving the cold and hiring me to photograph such an important year in your life. Hope your Senior year is all you wish it to be!

Sometimes it's hard to stick with things.

I remember years ago sitting in a newsroom editing pages and dreaming about photography. Wondering where I'd be in 5 years. If I'd have a cool website or the lenses I drooled over.

Several times I thought - when life got overwhelming and busy - "Jo just be content, this is what you'll do. You'll be a graphic designer and you'll have a creative job. You'll design ads and logos and such - layout pages and photography will just kinda be a back burner thing. A hobby. And that's ok."

And it probably could have been ok. But there was this nagging desire in my heart. That every time when I thought about photography just being my side hobby, my back burner activity - I felt a sadness in my soul.

You see, I couldn't stop dreaming about photography. It was all I thought about. Day and night. I'd wake up thinking about how I was going to learn a new skill - and go to bed wondering what I could tackle tomorrow. I'd scour the internet. Read books. Study what other photographers did. Sometimes that left me discouraged. Other times it empowered me. And all along the way I stuck with it. And years passed. And I still worked my full-time graphic design job. Fearful to take the leap. But more and more ready each year I became.

I had tried the different puzzle pieces of home sales. I loved to cook - and the recipes are fabulous but Pampered Chef wasn't what I dreamed about. Neither was Arbonne... though their products are fantastic. Photography was that puzzle piece that just fit my life. And I wanted it sooooo badly to just already make it's way into my life and complete my puzzle... but it took a long time.

Sometimes we don't want to stick with things. For so many reasons. We feel we aren't good enough. There's too much surrounding us. We feel overwhelmed. We want instant gratification and it's taking tooooo long for this thing to happen. Society teaches us to expect things to happen overnight. And for a few select people it does oddly happen overnight. But for most of us, it's a longer journey. And that's not a bad thing. Because in sticking with it... a lot can be learned about yourself. When the whole time you were just trying to learn your camera... eight years later you are surprised to learn that in addition to your technical knowledge of your gear increasing - you've learned just as much about you, your backbone, your motivation, your determination, your skills, your incessant drive and persistent hopes. As an artist, you've learned your medium and its intent.

I am thankful that I read the book Visionmongers. It literally changed my intent. It was what I needed to quit sitting poolside.

I am thankful this Thursday that I stuck with it. The back burner hobby.

In truth, I loved being a Graphic Designer. And for 14 years of my life it was a GREAT job. It put me on a path that led me to becoming a Photographer. I didn't know where it was leading me. But I stuck with it. And when it's really right, your heart gives you no other choice BUT to stick with it.

And in similar fashion - with so many trends in photography it's easy to want to jump on that path or another path. Many times this week it's been reiterated in different ways in my reading that you should stay on the path and PERFECT that path. There's a lot of really cool, amazing styles of photography out there today. Digital editing is such an incredible tool in niching your style. But focus on your style and hone in on it. Perfect it. Otherwise you waste time becoming distracted by all of the options and paths and end up being mediocre to good in several areas - but you haven't perfected that one that is you. I by NO means am an expert in this. But these are my thoughts and I just wanted to share and encourage anyone who feels like you've been waiting too long, you're discouraged and tired. Stay at it. Do the time. Do your diligent research. Perfect it. It's a life-long journey in the perfecting it part alone. But what a journey it is to do what your heart truly loves.

If you dye your hair, expect it to be two shades darker than the picture on the box shows.
Women spend more time prepping for a yearly than they do anything else.
Going to the grocery store is most cost effective on a full stomach.
Self-scanners seem appealing b/c they have no line. However 20 minutes into the process you remember why there were no lines.
People who manage multiple self-scanners do not appear to enjoy their jobs. Wonder why.
Kong Dog Toys really are the best chew-proof toy on the market.
If a nurse tells you that you have nice veins it really means she's going to use the biggest needle there is on the face of the earth to draw your blood.
Buttermilk cookies are sent from heaven. Everyday a stork delivers them to the small town of Nappanee, Indiana.
Kids will dress like it's July in January in the house. And sometimes they'll try to get away with it outside even.
Sometimes all you need is one really, really good song to change your day into something better.
Sunday driving is best reserved for backroads and Sundays. Get it people?!
I feel sorry for Amish horses. I do. Especially when it is cold and rainy.
Sunday driving doesn't apply to Amish. Only English. For Amish it's Sunday to Sunday driving.
Don't be surprised by what dance moves Disney can teach your kid.
Someone needs to invent chewy cough drops. I found this by accident when I tried one in my medicine from last year and it was interestingly much more tolerable.
Have to question your intent when you never buy Crystal Light, but randomly buy it b/c it now comes in MOJITO flavor.

Baby Jossi is the sweetest little baby girl! Every time I see her she just gets cuter and cuter!! She has these gorgeous blue eyes and such a delightful little personality to boot. She's a total charmer!!! I enjoyed photographing her and absolutely adore the ones of her in the angel wings. Such a little model baby!

I picked this idea because she made it personal. I didn’teven KNOW what my own name means! I appreciated that she looked it up! When Iread it and then researched it myself, I was touched. I thought about it for along time. I kept returning to it. And the thought that…

I am thankful for Grace.
It is part of my name. He knew my name before I received it.

Not every picture I select will be of spiritual value. Butfor this week – I was compelled to use this. I am an emotive person and gracehas been something of irreplaceable personal value to me, to all of us. I lovedthis suggestion b/c how many of us wish we could just wash away our faultyhearts with a bar of soap. With several bars of soap. How many of us wish wecould be made white as snow.

He makes us white as snow. Grace in the symbolism of soapand snow. I don’t know. It just touched me. Truly creative and different. Granted, her ideas allowed meto incorporate my own. And I love this photo for its personal value.

I’m sure my neighbors got a kick out of seeing me lay in my alley this morning.All 8 degrees and such…

Somedays it's not always easy to count up the blessings.

Today was a day. Let me tell you.

It started with the dentist at 9a. And news I didn't expect or want to hear. I heard numbers like $3,000 to $700 by the time they were done poking around my mouth. I literally asked the hygienist if 35 is too young for dentures... joking of course. I don't think she liked my joke. And those above numbers? Yeah, they didn't include what it will cost for my wisdom teeth to come out. Why on EARTH do we even HAVE wisdom teeth? It's so funny. They always tell me I have such pretty teeth. If only pretty teeth didn't have cavities. I brush my teeth 3x a day. It's flossing that gets me in trouble.

Let's see, I could buy another Mark ii AND a groovy lens OR fix my tooth.
I am SO beyond thankful that my children got my husband's teeth.

11a Leaving the dentist and driving through downtown South Bend, I literally saw TWO people picking their noses in their cars. And I'm talking no shame kind of picking. Like our cars were 2 feet apart. Can't ya'll save that for your country road? I was appalled. And I laughed. Laughed right at them. Yeah, I know you saw me, nose pickers. Laughed at how some people just don't care. You know? Do you know? Ewww. You were supposed to answer no to that.
I am thankful that I am still entertained by peoples lack of grace, formalities OR care.

Out of the city and almost home an Aztek {of all cars! I owned an Aztek once upon a time!} decided to pass a semi. Except that I was um, I dunno, 20-30 feet in front of him when he finally made it just in front of the semi {!!!} You bet he got my horn.
And I am thankful he didn't hit me.

2p this afternoon when I finally got home I literally knocked the trash can over carrying in groceries. Lettuce and trash ever-y-where. Then I knocked something I had just bought off the counter, it broke. Here comes Lily trying to lick it up. "Lily NO that's astringent!!" Within an hour Brendon had set a coffee cup on the counter, which I also gracefully managed to knock off onto the floor. Coffee and broken mug {say it with me...} ever-y-where. And then there was the conversation, "Brendon.. what are you doing with coffee?"
I am thankful that it's not worth it to cry over spilled milk, or lettuce, astringent or coffee for that matter. Instead, I laughed at my serious clumsiness today.

I know tomorrow is Friday the 13th but COME ON! Lol.

It just was one of those days where the blessings weren't so evident. Rather, a lot of crummy little mishaps that left me thinking it could've been worse ... so in THAT way I was thankful. :)

Counting my blessings even on the bad days.

{Justin & Ashley's Wedding | 11.19.11 | Fort Wayne, IN}

It's hard to know where to start with this amazing couple and their families. When I got the call from Ashley back in the summer of 2011 she was planning a November 2011 wedding. Some of my brides do book me on shorter notice, but most book about a year or so out. I did ask her for some info about her wedding, etc. She then explained to me why things were on shorter notice. She told me through tears that her Dad had brain cancer and they were wanting to plan the wedding for November so he could walk her down the aisle.

I say it all the time. And it's so true...

Every day is a gift.

Of course, my heart went out to her. And I was more than willing to accommodate being able to shoot their wedding. Ashley, like her dad and the rest of her family is a strong individual. She didn't want sympathy. Just good photographs on her wedding day... and specifically some of her and her dad, Stan. What's neat is that Stan pastors the church that Ashley was married in... it was a very special day. Both such beautiful families on each side.

I hadn't met Ashley and Justin before their day because of the shorter booking - so I was touched by how sweet they are - such a beautiful, in love, gorgeous couple. So much emotion is tied into a typical wedding day. Anytime someone's little girl is getting married... emotions just naturally run high. But combine that with the fact that this family had gone through a LOT in the last year. Stan had brain surgery to remove any cancer and was undergoing chemo treatments... and through it all was still positive, encouraging and so very thankful. You can read his journal and journey here on his caring bridge blog and also here on his personal blog. Just an incredible, incredible testimony to faith during hardships. What a beautiful picture it is of trust during the storms of life. He knows the plans He has for us. { Jer. 29:11} From my understanding, Stan has done very well with his treatments and surgery and has shown very positive progression. Please continue to pray for him and his family. Cancer is a scary thing no matter. I loved what Stan said on one of his blogs though: My Big "C" is still Christ! (Cancer is a "little C")

I have to say, watching Ashley's dad walk her down the aisle, even for me was such a touching moment. I've been lucky to photograph many brides walking down the aisle. This was different though. At one point they looked at each other and smiled. I feel so lucky to have caught that one second because I know it showed so much of how proud and thankful Stan was to be walking his daughter down the aisle. Such a beautiful, tender moment. Beautiful ceremony - Stan spoke a few words and prayed over Justin and Ashley - I think more than a few people were touched to tears during that prayer. Many times I don't shut my eyes when I am shooting during prayer b/c I am photographing people as they pray. Observing the emotion on Ashley's face as her dad prayed over her and her new husband on her wedding day, that alone made me cry. You could see how thankful she was that her Daddy was there, on that day, blessing one of the most important life-changing promises she will ever make.

This is when - and I've done it many times before - I stood back in moment of complete personal silence and realized that I have one of the most incredibly, emotionally touching jobs in the world. I watch tender, raw, real moments unfold. And then I photograph them. So many things contribute and lead up to that one emotional moment. And there I am at the end to catch it. That I am even privy to it, is such an HONOR and incredible blessing.

The day was perfect - really couldn't have asked for a better November day for a wedding. Weather was cooperative. Beautiful light. Beautiful location on a golf course to get some fun shots as well as gorgeous shots in a tree-lined drive. An awesome, beautiful wedding party to work with, I certainly couldn't complain. Perfection all the way to and through the reception. It was a packed reception, food was awesome and Justin and Ashley made cake-cutting adorably perfected. I have to say, again - knowing the situation with Ashley's family and her dad - was hard not to be emotionally touched yet again by their father/daughter dance. So many times they would just look at each other and laugh. Just adorable. There is something SO special about a Dad and his Daughter. He instills so much in her and up till that day he gives her away, he is showing her what to seek in a future husband. No doubt Justin loves Ashley and will treat her wonderful. The new Mr. & Mrs. were a riot on the dance floor together. I enjoyed watching them break out their moves. They were clearly having a blast. So important to just have fun together. Later on Ashley, her dad and her sister were all busting out some moves on the dance floor. I love to see a Dad dance with his daughters. That was one of the cutest things I have ever seen. They all had the moves too!

Thank you Justin and Ashley - and to both of your amazing families for being SO wonderful to work with. Stan, I am incredibly touched by your story, your strength and kindness - but most of all your faith. God bless your families.

Thank you for allowing me to be a very small part of your day.

2012 Goals

I've waited about a week now, thinking of different goals I have. I didn't just want to come up with a bunch of... stuff. I've given it some serious thought. I've been jotting them down throughout the new week. Some things we do, some we don't. I'd hope to accomplish all of these before next year.

So... here they are.

Remind my kids each day of how much I love them. Howimportant they are. Smart they are. How kind they are.

Budget my time more as to how many jobs I take per week.Last year was INCREDIBLE with my job – but this year I want to take just alittle less and budget more time for family and home.

Go to bed by 11p! This is gonna be a tough one.

I want to participate on Flickr more. There are some amazingartists out there on that website and I enjoy their inspiration.

Participate in another 365 project. Really try to maketaking a picture on each day a priority.

Join a small group at church. This.year.

Get the tattoo on my wrist that I have been wanting forawhile now.

Run another 5K this year.

Get new carpet in the house. A new roof on the garageand vintage tile flooring in thebathroom upstairs. Paint the front porch trim.

To make Weddings, Seniors and Babies my focus this year butstill shoot everything I love. :)

Really niche my style into fine art portraiture. I know whatI want to do. I have yet to actually just do it. I have been day dreaming aboutit for awhile.

Post less photos, concentrate on editing individual shotsmore.

Watch Photovision discs atleast 2x a week.

Spend a little more time on Google+

{Meet Jimmy & Becky | Inspiration}

Meet Jimmy & Becky. They are a beautiful, wonderful couple - I photographed their Engagement session this past October. That same weekend Jimmy found a lump in his neck and was soon after diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. He is working with exceptional radiologists and I believe - along with many - that he will absolutely beat this. He is young, clearly has too much fly fishing to do and has a beautiful girl to marry on September 22nd of this year. :)

No matter, cancer is scary. It doesn't care who it affects or afflicts. This family has been in my prayers. But the reason I share this story is because Jimmy is an incredibly driven young man and his blog is an inspiration to many, myself included. He is an EXCEPTIONAL WRITER and hey, his photographs of his fishing expeditions aren't too shabby either! His story is something that I asked if I could share. So with his permission...

For the last few months my website has been a temporary site through Zenfolio.com. Which wasn't so bad. I really love the fact that by having a Zenfolio site I can archive my hi-res files to cloud storage. :) The website end of it however didn't have quite enough kick for me, which is why I chose to host through bludomain.com. I used the template AVERY and LOVE it! Bludomain was super easy to navigate and I am really happy with the results. Cost at the end of the year? $200.

I do want to give my former website hosting: Photobiz.com a huge shout out. I hosted though them for many, many years and will miss their tremendous customer service. They are unparalleled in their customer care - but for me the choice was simple when I saw the savings I'd gain each year by using Blu. Because I host a lot of images in my galleries and in general with weddings, I save hundreds in the end.

It took me about 3 days to really get everything together for the site. Sorting images and sizing being the most time consuming. I am glad I don't have to update for atleast six months. It's been a yearly project every January pretty much so I may not make it back to updating my portfolio till next January. :)

In all honesty I could probably run a business {as many photographers do already} with just using a blog and Facebook. So why the portfolio? For me with being in an artistic background and feeling the need to have a place for my favorite photos to reside - it's just a mandatory thing and an important part of branding. The website says a lot about the artist - from the music to the overall look. A blog allows your clients to read about you and really get to know more of who you are.. but to me a website is important for representation in who you are and what you craft. Whereas you speak for you on a blog - your portfolio speaks for you on a website.

Also of huge importance to me is the ability to host a website that allows a tribute to my belated sister. If Jess were still with us today - though I wish it with all my heart - I may not have pushed myself as far with photography. Truth be told I'd probably still be sitting in an 8x8 office with no windows pushing papers for sales managers. As much as I hated losing my sister, that pain pushed me to succeed. And I'm proud of how hard I've worked the last two years. The ability to honor her and tell her story - the story of why life is SO valuable and each day such a gift... it's monumental to me. It's the reason I do this. My entire site, down to the logo itself all reflects my love for her and my love and gratefulness for life.

So in summary... I'm quite pleased with the new site. :)

I can't even begin to tell you how hard it is to pick my personal favorites out of thousands of photos that I shoot every year. It's incredibly hard. I wish I could feature them all. But there's no way you'd stick around to go through this blog post! Ha. Holy cannoli. There are a LOT of photos below~!

These are my very favorites from this past year, for whatever reason - they are the ones I love the very best.

To start though, I have to feature 2010 a little. Two photos from that year that I STILL LOVE a ton! They are both featured in my studio and on my new website.

Going into a new year there is so much on one's mind...

I know as a photographer - and this being a time for me to slow down a bit during the winter, I am able to reflect on what I accomplished last year. My successes and failures of 2011. I have a minute to think about how I can grow this year. How I grew last. What ways I can reinvent me this year.

2011 was an incredible year for me in this business. I am so thankful for the amazing people that entered my life because of this job! I made some awesometastic new friends. {And yes, friends who added that word I just used to my vocabulary and thereby make me cool.}

When I left my full time job in May of 2010 - I had hopes of being able to "just get by" in this over-saturated industry. There are many photographers today. It's an amazing job, I have to agree with them! I just hoped to be one of them, paying my bills but mostly... filling my heart with what it loves.

But I have been completely blindsided by how amazing His plans continue to be for me. If I am being completely transparent... I don't feel like some days I deserve any success because I fail daily as person. As a daughter. As a wife. As a mom. As a friend. I am imperfect. Undeservingly as it is, last year was incredible. More successful in my business than I had anticipated or imagined - atleast so early as to going into this job full time. There were times when I was completely overwhelmed with work to the point where I realized I needed to take less. I think photographers tend to learn that the hard way their first two years full-time in business. It was definitely easier to say photography was my hobby for 6+ years. So much more to juggle when it becomes your full time occupation.

In 2011 I made some amazing new friends and clients. I opened a small boutique studio in my hometown. I gained an INCREDIBLE intern, Ashley. I really found my niche in my style. I participated in a 365 project that was personal for me and such an inspiration and journey. I took some steps on a journey and made some progress, I have many steps to go... but I am happy where I am.

Today I was reminded of some things...

God is so forgiving and the way that He loves us is sometimes something we as humans can't even comprehend. His blessings too are sometimes hard to comprehend. Why does He do so much for us? Not to say that I haven't asked the tough questions in opposition... "Why didn't He change this situation?" or "Why did He take her home?" Every year there is bitter and sweet. Give and take. So we take them both, without question - only faith.. and with a thankful and humble heart say thank you. Because in reality, the day itself - is a gift. And of course - though we are content and He is our portion, we continue seek His favor. His blessing on a New Year.

Blessing is revocable though. Which is why I never want to take it for granted. And success - as amazing and exhilarating as it is can kill you. Success - once obtained - has ruined far more people than failure. Success can make you forget where you came from. It can blind you to the amazing thing that humility is. Failure however, reminds you without your asking. Failure reminds you of where you came from. But it also reminds you of where you are going. Because tomorrow is a new day. A new chance to tell failure that he was so "yesterday".

God help me to always be humble and remember my failures of yesterday and last year so that I know success today and this year - if any - comes only through You.

As for 2012...
I am exited about a new year. Another year in business! Another year of fun projects: My Flickr® 365 Project and a recent 52 Project with the Photographers of Northern Indiana on Facebook. I am also super excited about sharing my new website. It's coming soon! Woot, woot! I am beyond stoked about the weddings I've booked - I have some INCREDIBLE brides this year and am anticipating the new friends and clients I have yet to meet in this business. I am excited about what I will learn this year in this ever-evolving industry.

In shooting for the past 8+ years I have decided too that this is the year that I will try to narrow my market a bit to the following three categories: Weddings, Seniors & Babies. Not that I won't still shoot other things, I absolutely will. But not as much. I want to take more time to focus on the aforementioned three. Simply because those are the things I am feeling called to most right now. I have a passion for shooting families too - and will continue to book a very limited amount of regular family sessions per month. I will not be taking any family sessions in June or July however. Instead, I will offer 4-6 days a year that I book family mini-sessions using my vintage couch. The cost will be lower than a normal hour long family session, will be less time and photos - but perfect for the creative way to update the yearly family photo for Christmas and the walls. I will also periodically offer boudoir specials just to keep me on my toes with creativity in work.

So in all that is said... I am thankful for the success of this year. I realize that none of it comes through me. Any talent that I have or will ever have comes not from me but Him. I never want to take that for granted or get ahead of myself to attribute any accolades or success to me. He gave me this opportunity and I just want to continue to do what I love, thankfully.

{Josh & Britni | E-Session | Downtown Chicago}

Josh and Britni are the SWEETEST most adorable couple you will ever meet. They are ND & Saint Mary's alumni - getting married in the Basilica this summer.

I enjoyed being in Chicago with them. They are both very familiar with the city so between the 3 of us we all had some great ideas for the shoot! It was ridiculously cold. Josh endured being without his coat for the shoot and was such a gentleman to buy us all hot chocolate to keep us warm! They are just an adorably wonderful couple and I really enjoyed walking around town with them and getting to know more about them. Really excited about their wedding this summer.

Thank you guys for bearing through the crazy cold and wind. Thank you Josh for covering the taxi and talking him into waiting for us at the beach. Ha! Can't imagine us trying to hail a cab in that wind and cold. I think you guys did amazing and your session turned out GREAT - was so happy with some of the shots we got. You're a gorgeous couple - but even more than that the love you have for one another shines through the cold of a winter's day in Chicago... and I think THAT trumps the incredible scenic landscapes we had! Nothing
more enjoyable that photographing a couple so very in love.

{Nicole and Trent | Junkyard Love Session}

One of my favorite sessions I did this year was my Junkyard Love Session. I asked two awesome people {a former bride and groom of mine!} this fall to model for me in a junkyard session. I had been REALLY wanting to photograph a retro couple in a junkyard and these photos are what absolutely makes my heart jump for joy. I LOVE SESSIONS like this and so appreciate Trent and Nicole for patiently waiting on these photos while I worked on client-work first. They have been more than generous to model for me AND then patiently wait on me forever to finish these!! #1 Nicole and Trent look amazing - they totally cooperated in attire and posed for me as asked, Nicole even had her hair done for me! - so they made my job super easy. #2 they agreed to be my "guinea pigs" so to speak. I had never done a junkyard session. I could have spent all day in this square of acres.. It was like the equivalent of letting a 3 year old have run of an entire candy store. I just exploded with a million ideas of what I wanted to do... thank goodness for the rain that eventually stopped us. Ha. Nicole and Trent were quite patient with me.

Sometimes I think the work that you do for free, for YOU - the work without pressure - or expectation - or turnaround... it can be your very best. I swear, if I didn't have bills to pay... I would just shoot for free. Minus the fact that this job takes time away from my family... I love it so much. There are few downsides to what I do for a living.

I am so very lucky to have one of the coolest jobs ever.

I really want to do more sessions like this in the future and here's why. I think that the true beauty of romance - in its purest element is magnified when surrounded by its opposite. Love is spotlighted when surrounded by that which is falling apart, corrupting, decaying and aging. I am the optimist to find beauty in the rust - ask me why and I'll tell you it's forlorn - just like an old abandoned barn. There's a certain kind of beauty in solitude like that. That alone can make a picture... but add in two beautiful people who are deeply in love - and voila, perfection. I love the irony and juxtaposition of this entire session.

{Baby Navy | Newborn Session | 3 Days Fresh}

Can you believe this little peanut? He's so cute. Beautiful skin tones. Navy was born 3 weeks early and was only 3 days old when we shot his session. He was good size for being 3 weeks early! Our session took a little longer than most - but we managed to get some good photos and Navy {I LOVE HIS NAME SO MUCH!} was so patient with me. Thank you Courtney and Stockton for remaining SO patient and even coming back so we could get more photos. I'm glad we did and even though it took a little longer, it was well worth it. What a sweet baby boy you guys have. :)

Sometimes I gotta go away for a week to realize how much I need rest.

Mexico was truly so wonderful. The time away with Adrian was so good for both of us. We totally needed time for just us. I have never been to an all-inclusive resort. I had no idea of how much we would be waited on hand and foot and treated like royalty. It was incredible. I'm not gonna lie, I really miss the humidity of the island we were on. Ok, and the room service at 1a just because. And the sushi - the tempura was out.of.this.world. The drink of the day... missing that too. Ohhhh Meeeeehico.

Of course... I have a million + 1 pictures. Some really make me smile just remembering...

Those will come later though. Point of the post: I needed a vacation soooooo bad. I work really hard. Sometimes too hard. Going away and having time to just think about life, priorities and what matters really helped me a lot to come back completely refreshed and ready for a new year in a job I love. I am so fortunate in so many ways... today in church standing next to my husband and listening to him sing I realized that I was lucky to have such a wonderful vacation with him, but even luckier to come home to a life with him. He supports me incredibly.

I took time to reflect {while laying in a beach cabana with crashing waves and warm sun streaming in, champagne and strawberries} *stop, hatin' is bad.* about life. My job. My family. Memories with my sister. My wonderful friends. My clients who so often become friends of mine. I thought about how INCREDIBLY granted life has been to me. I don't deserve so many wonderful things. There is so much good to outweigh any bad. Having time to sit and think about all of these things was so medicinal for myself and Adrian as well. This man bought me TWO incredible massages on this trip. Talk about relaxation...

To be able to celebrate 15 years being married to someone who has endured my ups and downs and has been my best friend through it all... I am so very thankful. Thankful for time to reflect and to enjoy the season of life that is now.

Some of my clients are still waiting on photos - and I will be working all week on edits. I am excited to dig back into some editing. Thank you to those of you who have photos coming for allowing me time away. It was much needed and so very wonderful.

People will try to bully you.

People will tell you that you can’t succeed.
People will fail to encourage you and/or commend you.

And people will blame you for their something that failed long before you were in the picture.

Don’t allow their misery to become your own.

We all know you can’t lead a horse to water. And youcertainly can’t lead that horse forward out of yesterday if it’s entrenchedknee-deep in mud. Shake hands with yourself in five years, not the horse. Don’t try toget people to conceptualize it if they can’t. Just keep moving on. No one saidyou needed to rescue the horse. He’s knee-deep for his own reason. Be accountable to you and the people you love.

A bad situation doesn't make you a failure. You just have to choose to succeed today. Tomorrow. You can come from a bad childhood, a bad relationship, a bad past and can still pick yourself up and choose to win in life. Bad choices and - yesterday especially - does not make you a failure unless you remain in yesterday. The horse stuck in the mud chooses to remain there while everyone else is moving on.

In time, things that trouble you today will seem lessconcerning tomorrow. So allow time to do what it does - moving on making pastdays past. Time marches on with or without you. The key is to keep marchingwith it.

For the formidable yesterday – and we all have formidable yesterdays… Anticipateeach new 24 hours as a vehicle to march past the previous 24 if needed. Or..previous 26,280. Whatever it is… it was yesterday. The next 24 are yours tobetter. Choice is the one thing that can never, ever be taken away from you. Choose a better tomorrow by planning for it today.

Leave those hours, those people and places there. Don’tremain there with them. Believe in who you are today. And who you will betomorrow. The Purpose Driven Life is one of my very favorite books and talks so heavily about this very thing. What is a life without purpose? When the brevity of life is at hand, and each day is a gift - life requires purpose and direction. Without it you are just wasting your days stuck in the mud. Tell your family that you love them and anticipate the moments with them. Outside of that love and priority, all else fades away.

Keep moving on. There are better things ahead.

Yearly Christmas photos. :)
There is one time a year that I use a tripod... and it's for this.

Organizing and photographing your own family session has to be one of the most stressful things. I think by the time we got to the couch everyone had the general consensus opinion that we truly disliked family photo day... But after we are done we all laugh and say.. not till next year. It was actually enjoyable. :) We always manage to get something good - I blame it on those good looking kids and husband of mine. You surround yourself with them and you are bound to look good too. :)

Unlike trying to plan a session around good weather - as I typically do - b/c of being busy, super busy this year. {THANK YOU to all of you who contributed to an AWESOME, BUSY year!!} I didn't have a good weather day for a shoot - but between Adrian's schedule and mind, we had A DAY. So... we used it. It was CRAZY windy out. Which is why we used the alley. Also why Enna and I pulled our hair back. I really wanted to come up with a super cool place that I don't normally shoot.. I shoot in this alley all the time so to me, I get enough of it. And here I was on a windy day of all things. But... in the end when I looked at the pictures I got, hair back and alley and all.. I was really happy. Nothing makes me smile like the four of us on that vintage couch together. You could put that couch just about anywhere and as long as we are all on it, that's all that matters. It was 62 degrees that day. I remember being atleast thankful for that.

And... Thankful that despite weathering bad weather on photo days and sometimes in life, it all manages to turn out pretty well as long as you were thankful for what you did get.

PS.. I saved the best for last. That by far was my favorite shot. :)

I just adore these two little guys. I have photographed them a couple of times now and am amazed that each time I see them they are so much bigger. {Baby Hannah | Newborn Session}

Katie is my sweet cousin. I was so happy to be able to go and photograph her first baby - beautiful Hannah. My cousin David, Katie's brother was also there - I loved some of the pix of him holding Hannah, so sweet! Hannah is a friend and colleague. She is an amazing photographer and I am always impressed with her tremendous talent even having started at such a young age. I typically don't photograph extended families but I made an exception for Hannah b/c I know as a photographer is it NOT easy to photograph your own family. {And I only have 4 people! It totally stresses ME out to photograph my own! Lol.} I really enjoyed my time photographing them and couldn't help but laugh at how much fun they all have together. That's what family is all about. You can certainly tell they all love one another very much... but also are quite capable of making each other crack up and laugh... a lot. Very sweet, beautiful family!

This beautiful family had a beautiful property to use for their session! They were all very festive with their red and burberry scarves. And I appreciated that they wanted to do some fun shots too with all the traditional. The kids were adorable and cracked me up with mom and dad would kiss. :) I think we got some great photos! Thanks guys for hiring me to photograph your family for the holiday season!

I totally loved this couple from the minute I met them! They're chill and just awesome. :) In photographing them though I really got to see how much they adore each other and their sweet doggie, Champion. :) {Champion has some pretty cool tricks btw!} I am so excited for Sean and Bobbi's wedding - they just seem like such a fun couple and I have no doubt their wedding is going to be a wonderful celebration - how can it not be? Cinco de Mayo!! :)
